Districts

The five core districts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island
Main article: Borough (New York)
New York City comprises five boroughs called communes or districts, an unusual form of government used to administer the five counties that constitute the city. In every district there are hundreds of neighborhoods, many with an own identity and past . If each district is an independent city, Brooklyn, Queen, Manhattan and the Bronx would be among the ten most populated cities in the United States.
Bronx (1,364,566 inhabitants) is the most northern district. Is located in Yankee Stadium, stadium of the New York Yankees. Except for a small part of Manhattan known as Marble Hill, Bronx is the only section of the city that is part of the United States continental shelf. It is the headquarters of the Bronx Zoo, the largest metropolitan zoo in the country, with an area of 107.2 hectares and home to over 6,000 animals. The Bronx is the birthplace of rap and hip hop culture. 91
Brooklyn (2,511,408 inhabitants) is the most populous district of the city and was an independent city until 1898. Brooklyn is known for its cultural diversity, social and ethnic diversity, its independent art scene, distinct neighborhoods and a unique architectural heritage. It has also long beaches and the peninsula of Coney Island today, where they settled in the 1870s the first amusement parks in the country.
Manhattan (1,593,200 inhabitants) is the most dense district and home to most of the skyscrapers of the city, as well as Central Park. The district is the center of town and located the headquarters of many major corporations, such as the UN, as well as major universities and many cultural attractions, including museums, the theaters of Broadway, Greenwich Village and the Madison Square Garden. Manhattan is basically divided into the regions of Lower, Midtown, and Uptown. Uptown Manhattan is divided by Central Park Upper East Side and Upper West Side, and north of the park is called Harlem.
Thirty counties in the metropolis, it is noteworthy that the districts should not be named and also any city within a county will be another district.
Queens (2,256,576 inhabitants) is the largest district geographically and the most ethnically diverse county in the United States and may overtake Brooklyn as the most populous of the city because of its growth. In its origins, the district was a collection of small towns and villages founded by the Dutch. At present it is mostly residential and middle class. It is the only large county in the country where the average income of blacks ( 52,000 approximately) was higher than that of whites. Queens is the home of Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets, and annually hosted the United States Open. Furthermore, in the district are the two major airports, LaGuardia Airport and John F. International Airport Kennedy.
Staten Island (475,014 inhabitants) is a district of suburban character. Is connected to Brooklyn by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and to Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry. Until 2001, the district was the largest garbage dump in the world, currently being renovated as a park. Staten Island has about half of the protected area of the city’s third district is wooded area.
